Is a root canal really painful? What it actually feels like

If you've been told you need a root canal, you're probably dreading it. Most people are. But the pain people remember usually comes from the infected tooth itself, not the treatment.
Why root canals have a bad name
Decades ago, anaesthetics were weaker and instruments slower. Today, we use modern numbing, rotary instruments and digital X-rays. Treatment is faster and far more comfortable.
What you will actually feel
First, numbing gel on the gum, so the injection feels like a small pinch. Once you're numb, you'll feel pressure and hear the instruments, but not pain. Many people listen to music. You can raise your hand any time to pause.
"Most patients tell me afterwards it felt like a long filling."
The days after
Expect mild soreness for 2–3 days, easily managed with ordinary painkillers. Most people go back to work the same day.
What it costs
At Archis, a root canal costs ₹4,500–9,000 depending on the tooth. A crown, if advised, is ₹5,000–15,000. You get the exact figure in writing before we start.
